Относительно людей-наркоманов было известно, что им свойственно импульсивное поведение и плохо развитое умение планировать свои действия, но не было понятно, было ли это свойство присуще им до того, как они стали наркоманами, или развилось вследствие приема наркотиков.
В экспериментах на крысах было выявлено, что существует часть крыс, более «импульсивных», чем остальные. Эти крысы, когда им предлагается 2 варианта получения еды – много, но с задержкой во времени и мало, по прямо сейчас, всегда выбирают прямо сейчас, и также не справляются с другими задачами «на терпение». В экспериметне с неограниченным доступом к кокаину эти крысы упоребляют вдвое больше кокаина за один прием, чем остальные, и именно они быстро приобретают наркозависимость.

В экспериментах, где ради получения наркотика крысе нужно было пройти через пластину, бьющую током, крысы поведенчески разделились на две части: около 80% прекратило принимать наркотики, избегая удара током, а около 20% продолжало принимать наркотик, игнорируя наказание.
Кроме группы «импульсивных» крыс выделилась также группа крыс, с наибольшим интересом реагирующих на все новое – «искателей новых ощущений». И оказалось, что эти группы крыс не пересекаются. Искатели новых ощущений быстрее научаются тому, как достать наркотик, но они более к нему чуствительны, и оттого им достаточно гораздо меньших доз наркотика, за счет чего они не становятся наркоманами.

При введении дофамина с радиоактивной меткой крысам-наркоманам выяснилось, что у склонных к наркомании крыс крайне низок уровень рецепторов дофамина в одной из подкорковых структур мозга – вентральном стиатуме. Рецепторы дофамина нужны для того, чтобы нейрон мог воспринять дофаминовый сигнал и система вознаграждения заработала, а вентральный стриатум – ключевая часть этой системы. Принятие наркотиков можно трактовать как попытку самолечения мозга, восполнения недостатка дофамина в системе вознаграждения. Эксперименты показали, что у этих крыс кокаин и амфетамины уменьшают импульсивность.
