Many middle class people are beginning to feel the strain of the high cost of living and the outsourcing of white-collar jobs abroad. A report from Keele University in Staffordshire concludes that an “unrestrained pursuit of self-interest and profit” is driving the middle class to become the largest single group of law breakers in Britain. The increase in “middle-class crime” includes wide-ranging offences from stealing office stationery to fraud and software piracy. This could potentially prove more costly to the nation than burglary, with the amounts involved currently estimated at up to £14bn annually, nearly five times that of burglary. A report by the Elizabeth Finn Trust has found middle class professionals are the UK’s hidden poor, with 3.8m living below the poverty line. The report states: “Overall, it seems likely that the professional classes will polarise more in the future.” This is why some experts are predicting a Marxist-style revolution.
